Make Your Cake and Eat it Too While Helping Local Charities
The Chef for a Day program at Kuleto's and Ponzu in San Francisco gives food lovers and aspiring chefs the opportunity to cook like a professional for a day. For a donation to a local hunger-fighting organization, guest chefs dress in chefs' whites and shadow Executive Chefs at either Kuleto's or Ponzu.

Learn how to prepare contemporary Italian dishes with Kuleto's Chef Sharyl Seim. Chop up vegetables for the Baby Spinach Salad, prepare all the fixings for the Roasted Alaskan Halibut with Sautéed Beans, Yukon Potatoes and Tomato Salsa and bake Crisp Cannoli Pastry Shells. Guest chefs can "work" a 4-8 hour shift. At the end of the shift, the participating "chef" and a guest are treated to a meal prepared by Chef Seim in Kuleto's dining room. Guest chefs also receive a Kuleto's cookbook and a signature bottle of olive oil. The cost for participation is a $150 donation to the San Francisco Food Bank. The Chef for a Day program at Kuleto's began in December 1999 and has raised $16,000 for the San Francisco Food Bank. Cook modern Asian dishes alongside Ponzu Chef John Beardsley and help raise funds for Project
Open Hand. Slice and dice lime leaf, crispy shallots, and Thai basil for the Bangkok Melon Salad,
barbeque up Korean Red Hot Flatiron Steak, stir-fry "Kung Pao" Chicken and make Coconut Cream
Pie Puffs. At the end of the shift, participating "chefs" are invited to indulge in a dinner prepared by
Chef Beardsley. The cost for participation is a $100 donation to Project Open Hand. For more

Kuleto's is located at 221 Powell Street, in the heart of Union Square just off the Powell Street cable car line. Kuleto's Italian Restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner daily, 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Caffe Kuleto's is open from 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Kuleto's Italian Wine Bar is open from 4:30 p.m. - 11 p.m., Monday- Sunday. Ponzu is located at 401 Taylor Street at O'Farrell in San Francisco's historic Theatre District. Dinner is served Tuesday through Thursday, from 5 p.m. - 10 p.m. and Friday through Saturday, from 5 p.m. - 11 p.m. The lounge is open Tuesday - Saturday from 4:30 p.m. - midnight.
